| Mo. governor to discuss auto task force findings - MSN Money Posted: 09 Sep 2009 07:58 AM PDT KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon is set to release a final report on ways to bring more auto manufacturing jobs to the state. Nixon planned to release the Automotive Jobs Task Force report Wednesday after touring Ford Motor Co.'s Kansas City Assembly Plant in Claycomo. Nixon appointed the panel earlier this year to recommend ways Missouri could better compete to attract companies building the next generation of fuel-efficient vehicles. Those vehicles would include electric cars and trucks powered by fuel cells. The downturn of the U.S. automotive industry has cost thousands of Missourians their jobs at plants in the St. Louis and Kansas City areas. Copyright 2009 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. | Insurance Companies' Policies on 'Total Loss' Improve Supply of ... - PR Newswire Posted: 09 Sep 2009 07:08 AM PDT MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Sept. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Recently, there has been a dip in the actual cash value (ACV) of vehicles, following a drop in the prices of used vehicles due to the economic decline. The higher prices of raw materials have hiked repair costs, resulting in more 'total loss' claims and eventually, a greater number of salvaged parts. Conversely, the use of salvaged parts will lower the cost of repair, which will result in reduced 'total loss' vehicles, benefiting the insurance companies. (Logo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20081117/FSLOGO) New analysis from Frost & Sullivan (http://www.automotive.frost.com), Strategic Analysis of the North American Automotive Salvage Industry, finds that the market earned revenues of $3.2 billion in 2008. If you are interested in a virtual brochure, which provides a brief synopsis of the research and a table of contents, send an e-mail to David Escalante, Corporate Communications, at david.escalante@frost.com, with your full name, company name, title, telephone number, company e-mail address, company website, city, state and country. Upon receipt of the above information, a brochure will be sent to you by e-mail. "More insurance companies are advocating the use of salvage (recycled) parts, as they try to control collision repair costs, thereby driving unit shipment of salvage parts," says Frost & Sullivan Industry Manager Avijit Ghosh. "If repair costs are not controlled, the insurance premiums will amplify." Further, salvage is a convenient way of getting rid of used vehicles. As the owners who donate their used cars get tax credits, there has been a rise in the availability of salvage parts and used-vehicle owners are increasingly turning to the salvage industry. The lower market for retail-used vehicles and new vehicles has affected dealer demand for wholesale used vehicle inventory, reducing the prices of salvage parts. Moreover, the salvage industry participants have to stave off stiff competition from original equipment manufacturer (OEM) parts, especially in collision repair. This is because OEM parts are considered to have better fit, form, and function and provide enhanced safety, durability, and reliability. Repair shops use a high percentage of OEM parts in crash repair because they get higher margins on them. They find it a riskless proposition to order OEM parts as the insurers pay a higher amount for them. This effectively eats into the sales of alternate parts (aftermarket and salvage parts). "However, some insurance companies fully support and encourage repair shops' usage of salvage parts for collision repair," notes Ghosh. "The primary objective is to reduce the cost of repair practice and maximize the value of the salvage vehicles." Meanwhile, with more orders for late models, North American brands in developing countries have escalated the demand for salvage vehicles that are easily reconditioned to a reasonable state at an acceptable value, in order to maximize returns. With college football already underway and the NFL season kickoff in sight, the editors thought it would be a perfect time to highlight several new cars and trucks that are great for tailgating parties. If one seeks evidence of a higher power, ponder the seamless transition between the end of summer and the beginning of football season; one weekend people are picnicking in the park, and the next they are tailgating in a stadium parking lot. Nerad, executive editorial director and executive market analyst for Kelley Blue Book's kbb.com. "While some may only think of the traditional pickup truck as being ideal for tailgating, our choices show that there are tailgate-friendly vehicles available in just about every size and price-point." | 5-vehicle wreck shuts down University Ave. Teen accused of stealing ... - Gainesville Sun Posted: 09 Sep 2009 07:22 AM PDT One other person was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries received in the final crash, a five-car pile-up at 100 E. University Avenue at 3:30 p.m. The driver who had to be cut out of the stolen truck was identified by Gainesville police as Perry O. Swinton Jr., 18, of St. Petersburg. Gainesville Police spokesman Keith Kameg said the truck's airbag may have saved the driver of the stolen white Chevrolet pickup. "We had witnesses tell us he was driving 100 mph down University Avenue, but how they knew it was 100 mph, I don't know," Kameg said. Drivers were detoured around the crash site for about two hours while an investigation was conducted and the vehicles were cleared from the roadway. Kameg said the truck was apparently stolen at about 3:15 p.m. after a transportation worker left the keys in it in the 1500 block of East University Avenue. DOT spokeswoman Gina Busscher said a preliminary review of her agency's mobile equipment manual did not seem to specifically state that drivers are required to remove the ignition keys. The manual does require that "all operators must adhere to all laws and all regulations," Busscher said. Once Swinton got behind the wheel of the truck, he reportedly caused a crash at Waldo Road and East University Avenue and another accident in the 300 block of East University before the five-vehicle pile-up downtown. Police said the first two crashes were fender-benders that caused relatively minor damage and left no one injured. The names of those involved in the wrecks and detailed information about the case was not immediately available. "We already know that he (Swinton) will be charged with auto theft because even though the keys were left in the truck, he took it without permission," Kameg said. "He will also be charged with multiple traffic offenses - so many traffic offenses that we haven't even counted them yet and it may take a couple of days to get this all written up."
