| Breaking Tradition: Girls Succeed in Male-Dominated Careers - WCAX Posted: 19 Oct 2009 06:13 AM PDT Randolph Center - October 19, 2009 On a chilly morning in Randolph Center, 400 high school girls are rising above the norm and trying some new terrain. At the 11th annual Woman Can Do! Conference girls get to try their gloved hands at male-dominated careers like chainsawing, auto body tech, carpentry, Internet engineering and welding. Far from their male classmates the girls show no fear, from climbing a fire truck ladder in full fire garb to testing their skills with a chainsaw. But many of the participants say they wouldn't be as comfortable trying these new things if they were learning in a co-ed environment. "If I wasn't so sure it would make me uncomfortable and not want to do it with all the boys," said Hartford H.S. junior Katelyn Lyman. Tiffany Bluemle, executive director of Vermont Works for Women, says it's important for the girls to see what they're capable of because they don't usually see people who look like them doing what they're doing today. "The electrician that comes to their house isn't a woman, the truck driver that's working on the highway project isn't a woman," Bluemle says. That's because the majority of women are tracked into so-called "pink collar" jobs in the caring professions like child care and teaching. However, those fields typically pay less than the male-dominated ones, which is why 54 percent of the women living in poverty are single, without kids, yet they have full-time jobs. "What this tells us is work isn't working for a lot of women," Bluemle says. It certainly wasn't working for women like Demeny Pollitt. After years as a social worker she realized she was spending all her spare money fixing her car. So she went to an auto training program where she was one of only two women in the class. "I think it's an unusual career for a woman and so people don't think about it, and when they do think about it they're not terribly encouraged to do it," Pollitt says. Pollitt now owns Girlington Garage in South Burlington, but despite the female theme of her company's name, Pollitt says she's had difficulty finding female auto techs to join her business. At the conference, participants say seeing these role models has opened their eyes to things they never thought they were capable of. "It's really nice to know that women do show that they can be just like men," said Montpelier H.S. senior Kaiya Andrews. Conference organizers look at the event as a day to open girls' minds by breaking old traditions and hopefully starting new ones. "It's a little heavy for me but running the chainsaw you've got to have a lot of muscle and strength," Andrews said after cutting her first log with a chainsaw. "It does show we can do it!" | Ford F-150 SVT Raptor named 2010 Texas Truck of the Year - autoblog Posted: 19 Oct 2009 07:03 AM PDT PRESS RELEASE By taking the established performance of Ford F-150 to the next level, the 2010 F-150 SVT Raptor provides the customer with the ultimate in off-road – and on-road – ability Dallas, Oct. 18, 2009 – The all-new 2010 Ford F-150 SVT Raptor is much more than an off-road performance truck capable of taking on the toughest terrain a customer can throw its way. According to the Texas Auto Writers Association (TAWA), it's also the one and only 2009 "Truck of Texas," the seventh consecutive time a Ford truck has won the award. "Winning the Truck of Texas is a distinct honor," said Mark Fields, president, The Americas, Ford Motor Company. "Texans know their trucks, and this award is further proof of why the F-150 remains America's number-one selling pickup. We built F-150 SVT Raptor for truck enthusiasts. And we're gratified it's gaining recognition for both its unequaled off-road performance and confidence-inspiring on-road demeanor." Ford's 2010 F-150 SVT Raptor is a purpose-built, high-speed off-road truck that is ready for adventure – while also being versatile enough to handle the daily commute. To test the capability and durability of Raptor, Ford took a modified pre-production Raptor to the grueling 41st Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 this past November. The early-build Raptor not only survived Baja, it earned a podium finish in its class. Key enablers to the Raptor's impressive performance are functional design cues and impressive suspension technology. The Raptor is seven inches wider than a base F-150 to make room for the additional suspension components that give Raptor its off-road abilities. The wider stance also gives the truck an aggressive appearance. Internal triple-bypass shocks by FOX Racing Shox – the first on a production truck – provide position-sensitive damping and extra suspension travel for extreme off-roading and a smooth ride on the road. In addition to the shocks, Raptor has unique cast-aluminum front control arms and SVT-tuned 35-inch BFGoodrich® All-Terrain TA/KO 315/70-17 tires. These components give Raptor 11.2 inches of front suspension travel and 12.1 inches of rear suspension travel. The F-150 SVT Raptor comes standard with the proven 5.4-liter SOHC V-8 engine that produces up to 320 horsepower and 390 ft.-lb. of torque. In early 2010 customers will have the option of an even more powerful new 6.2-liter V-8 engine. Customer anticipation has been extremely high, with 3,000 orders already received for the 5.4-liter F-150 SVT Raptor. In fact, initial dealer orders have the Dearborn Truck Plant building Raptors at maximum capacity, reflecting the strong demand for the first-ever factory high-speed off-road truck. Starting price for the F-150 SVT Raptor is $38,995 including destination and delivery charges. It is currently on sale at Ford dealerships. This content has passed through fivefilters.org. |
| Commercial Bankruptcies: Preference Payments - InsideARM Posted: 19 Oct 2009 06:28 AM PDT The items below are excerpted from the Business Bankruptcy News Bulletin. A full issue contains information on dozens of troubled companies, as well as informational and analysis highlights. Please visit the insideARM bookstore for information on subscribing to the Bulletin. A preference occurs when a bankrupt debtor treats one creditor more favorably than another. For example, a debtor may choose to use all of its assets to pay off the entire debt owed to one creditor, leaving a other creditors unable to collect any money at all. A court will disallow a preference, if that payment is made for the benefit of a creditor, for a debt owed prior to the bankruptcy filing, if the payment is made while the debtor is insolvent and the transfer is made within ninety days of the debtor's filing the bankruptcy petition (or one year, if the payment was made to an insider such as a relative or corporate director). In such a situation, a creditor receiving a preference may be forced to restore it to the debtor's estate. However, as a general rule, creditors only need to show the payment was made in the ordinary of course of doing business, in order to avoid having to pay back any monies to a trustee or debtor-in-possession. WINDEBT Collection SystemThe leader in Windows based collection software for Agency, DebtBuyers, DebtSellers and In-House operations. In addition, the law bars the pursuit of a preference action by a debtor or trustee when the aggregate amount of the payments in question to a creditor is less than $5,000. Also, any attempts to recover amounts less than $10,000 from any one creditor, by a debtor or trustee, must be made in the District Court in the creditor's jurisdiction rather than in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court where the case is being administrated. Accuride Corp., an Evansville, In. manufacturer of aluminum wheels for commercial trucks, trailers and military vehicles, filed Chapter 11 in an effort to restructure its balance sheet. The filing, made in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Delaware with twenty affiliates, listed assets and liabilities of $682 million and $847 million respectively, as of the end of August. For further information contact the court in Wilmington, De. at 302-252-2560 and refer to case number 09-13449. Charter Communications Inc., the bankrupt St. Louis, Mo. cable operator, has changed its debt restructuring deal with its chairman that effectively gives it until 12/15 to exit bankruptcy proceedings. The court has not yet ruled on the company's reorganization plan. For more information call the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York at 866-232-1268 and refer to case number 09-11435. Greektown Casino-Hotel has seen a plan, that would allow control of the firm handed over to its largest creditor group, tentatively approved by the city of Detroit. A hearing, to make the plan permanent, has been set for 11/3 by the court. The casino, which originally filed last year, has more $772 million in debt. Lear Corp., the Southfield, Mi. maker of automotive components, is reportedly in an arrangement with Citigroup Inc., J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. and UBS on a $400 million exit package that basically refinances a debtor-in-possession loan. It had earlier been thought that the loan would be in the range of $300 million. Six Flags Inc., the Manhattan, N.Y. operator of theme parks, received approval from the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for its Six Flags New Orleans park to be taken over by Southern Star Amusements. Six Flags will pay the city of New Orleans $3 million and a fourth of any insurance proceeds over $65 million that it receives for damage stemming from Hurricane Katrina. The Chicago Cubs major league baseball team, which is being purchased by the Ricketts family for $845 million, has filed Chapter 11 in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Delaware, as part of the purchase process. The bankruptcy proceeding, made to protect the new owners from potential creditor claims, is expected to be a short one as the sale is being handled under Section 363 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code.

| Ford car color survey reveals quirks - Dallas Morning News Posted: 19 Oct 2009 05:38 AM PDT Cincinnati is the top market for red cars in the U.S., while Philadelphia buyers prefer blue, according to sales data released last week by Ford Motor Co. Sometimes color preferences are logical. Buyers in hot cities like Dallas and Phoenix like white cars while buyers in colder cities – Minneapolis, Pittsburgh, Detroit – are partial to red, according to Ford's data. No-nonsense New Yorkers like black and gray. Sometimes the preferences are a puzzle. Boston is the top market for both brown and green cars, for example, while San Franciscans like silver. In Florida, they like gold. Silver was the most popular color in the U.S. this year for the ninth year in a row, according to data released this month by Pittsburgh-based paint maker PPG Industries Inc. Twenty percent of U.S. cars are silver. White finished second, and black was third. Ford also found that Boston was the top market for its four-cylinder engines, while Houston, the top market for pickup trucks, gets its vroom from V8s. San Francisco, Seattle and Los Angeles are the top markets for hybrids. It may seem trivial, but the information is crucial to the company and its dealers. Ford said it analyzes the data carefully to figure out which vehicle configurations will be the top sellers in any region. Ford said the correct vehicle mix results in better sales and customer service because customers can find the vehicles they want more quickly.
