Lowe Ave., Chicago, was charged with retail theft and possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia after he was caught stealing $409 worth of liquor Oct. 10 Jewel-Osco, 9424 Pulaski Road, police said. BATTERY Brad Frencl, 19, of Stickney, was charged with battery after an Oct. 10 fight at an apartment in the 6600 block of 95th Street, police said. RETAIL THEFT Felicia Kaprak, 30, 13954 Walter Drive, Crestwood, was charged with retail theft after she was caught stealing meat Oct. 10 from Dominick's Finer Foods, 8700 Cicero Ave., police said. VANDALISM Illegible words were etched Oct. 13 into a window at Southwest Obstetrics, 4225 W. 95th St. DOMESTIC BATTERY Paul Divincenzo, 45, 5633 S. America used to be full of GM people or Ford people - people who traded in one GM product for another, over and over again, throughout their lifetime. They might move up from a Chevrolet to a Cadillac if their career took off, but wouldn't dream of leaving General Motors. Even after Japanese automakers reached mainstream success in America, the pattern remained. Some people were just Honda buyers, or Toyota fans. Not anymore. The New York Times reports, "So far this year, only about 20 percent of car shoppers stayed with the same brand when they purchased a new vehicle, according to a study by the Oregon-based firm CNW Marketing Research." The same study showed that, in the 1980's, "Nearly four in five Americans were repeat buyers." Buying patterns are changing, Kicking Tires reports, because cars are improving. "In any given segment, most products have the same safety and convenience features, so distinction becomes more a matter of individual taste." Today's car buyer uses the internet to comparison shop "down to the smallest detail." And we know a great site where you can do that... The change in buying habits has forced the auto industry to re-think how it sells its products. The Times notes, "In the glory days of Detroit's Big Three, the companies and their advertising agencies invested heavily to market slogans that covered a wide range of products. Ad campaigns like Chevrolet's 'Heartbeat of America' and 'Have You Driven a Ford Lately?' were used to market everything from small cars to big pickup trucks." Commercials didn't sell a specific car or truck, they marketed the company behind it. Today, Kicking Tires explains, "Automakers have to sell products on an individual basis rather than relying on their brand." The trend, however, is great news for consumers. It means that automakers are forced to concentrate on building an excellent car in order to compete in any particular segment of the market. Unable to count on customer loyalty, automakers need to build the best car they can in order to stay afloat. Buyers, meanwhile, are in the powerful position of picking from dozens of well-made cars. The news might even pave the way for the resurgence of Detroit - five of the top ten cars in our Affordable Midsize Car ranking list, at the moment, are built by American automakers. The Tokyo Motor Show doesn't have as much going on in the way of cars as we'd like, but there are still a few gems among the pack – especially in the area of motorsports. The Japanese are as keen about their sports as they are their motors, and when the two are combined, you get some pretty tasty kit. Examples? Retail sales gain hints Canada edging to recovery - ReportonBusiness.com Posted: 22 Oct 2009 08:11 AM PDT OTTAWA (Reuters) - Canadian retail sales posted better than expected gains in August, data showed on Thursday, adding to recent evidence that the economy is crawling toward recovery. Higher sales at gasoline stations and new car dealers drove sales up by 0.8 percent in August, more than retracing the unexpected drop of 0.5 percent in July, Statistics Canada said. Excluding these retailers, sales were flat. The increase was greater than the 0.4 percent rise predicted by market analysts. In volume terms, retail sales grew by 0.4 percent from July. "In a bigger picture sense, this report just confirms that the domestic economy is OK. Not too hot, not too cold, just OK," said Scotia Capital economists Derek Holt and Karen Cordes in a note. The Canadian dollar extended the session's decline against a broadly stronger U.S. dollar after the retail data, as appetite waned for higher-risk currencies ahead of the Bank of Canada's Monetary Policy Report while global stocks fell. Analysts said the job gains in recent months have influenced consumers to spend again, even if the goods purchased were narrowly based in the automotive group. Sales at gasoline stations rose by 3.9 percent from July while sales at new car dealers were up by 2.2 percent after two relatively flat months. A major contributor to the gain was a rise in truck sales. "Not that sales in these areas cannibalized the other categories necessarily, but there seemed to be little interest beyond the auto sector," said Stewart Hall, an economist at HSBC Canada. Sales declined at general merchandise stores (-0.4 percent) and miscellaneous retailers (-0.2 percent), but building and outdoor home supplies store sector was up by 0.5 percent. Still, some were encouraged by other details, including more sales in furniture and home furnishings, and clothing, but it may not be enough to lift economic growth in August. "Overall, this was a positive report, and it suggests that Canadian consumer spending may have regained its mojo in August, following the disappointing decline in July," said Millan Mulraine, economics strategist at TD Securities. "However, notwithstanding the favorable support from consumer spending, the Canadian economy is expected to post its second consecutive month without GDP growth in August." Excluding the automotive sector, which includes sales by new and used car dealers and parts stores, retail sales in August advanced by 0.5 percent, less than the 0.6 percent rise predicted by analysts.
