It's official: Chrysler creates separate Ram brand - Saginaw News Posted: 05 Oct 2009 08:17 AM PDT By The Associated PressOctober 05, 2009, 11:30AM![]() The moves, announced Monday, marked the second management shake-up since Fiat Group SpA CEO Sergio Marchionne took control of Chrysler on June 10 when it emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. Peter Fong, president and CEO of the Chrysler brand and the company's top sales executive, and Michael Accavitti, president and CEO of the Dodge brand, abruptly left the company, Fong for personal reasons and Accavitti to pursue other interests, Chrysler said in a statement. Sales of Chrysler Group LLC vehicles, which consist of the Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep brands, are down 39 percent for the first nine months of the year. Chrysler also was caught unprepared for the government's Cash for Clunkers program and had too few small vehicles on dealer lots to benefit much from the rebates. Chrysler sales spokesman Gualberto Ranieri would not comment when asked if the departures were related to Chrysler's sales performance. Chrysler said that it would split the Dodge brand into truck and car groups. The truck group will be led by Fred Diaz Jr., who previously ran the company's Denver business center. The Ram brand consists of the company's new Ram pickup trucks, as well as its commercial vehicles. Diaz also will take over as lead sales executive in the U.S. for the Chrysler Group organization. Vice President of Design Ralph Gilles will take over leadership of the Dodge car brand, which includes minivans, in addition to his current design responsibilities, the company said. The two men replace Accavitti, who resigned to pursue other interests, Chrysler said. Accavitti was appointed to head Dodge by Marchionne in June when Chrysler emerged from Chapter 11. "This reorganization will allow us to protect and develop the unique nature of the product offerings within the Dodge brand," Marchionne said in a statement. The company also said Fong resigned for personal reasons, and he was replaced by an executive from Fiat, Oliver Francois, as Chrysler brand president and CEO. Francois served as head of the Lancia brand, Chrysler said in a statement. Michael Manley remains as president and CEO of the Jeep division.

Double the pinch for auto wreckers - Merced Sun-Star Posted: 05 Oct 2009 05:33 AM PDT They started with one old tow truck and bought their first wrecking yard in Stevinson on a payment plan. Now the company has locations across the Valley and brings in about $1 million a year, said Romero. Like any businessman, Romero laments the continually rising cost of doing business. Licenses, fees, insurance and taxes were a pittance in 1971 when compared to today's cost, Romero said. Aside from the cost of doing business in the 21st century, Romero's wrecking company has to account for every car they buy and tear apart for scrap metal and parts. Twice a week he sends reports accounting for all the cars that come into his possession to the California Department of Motor Vehicles in Sacramento, a death certificate of sorts for demolished cars. The thick files weigh down one of his office cabinets. But as of March of this year, Romero has been sending virtually the same reports to the federal government. And to do that he had to buy reporting software and pay a fee to the company that acts as the government's go-between. He also has to pay that company 35 cents for every car report they receive. This redundant system, which auto wreckers must pay for, is the result of a federal law passed in 1992 to keep track of cars and to prevent the theft and resale of cars that go to wrecking yards, among other places. The National Motor Vehicle Title Information System, or NMVTIS, is administered by the Department of Justice. But until this year, the DOJ had yet to set up the system. A 2008 lawsuit changed that. Headed by Public Action and other groups, the federal lawsuit finally forced the DOJ into implementing NMVTIS. In the process, auto wreckers have been caught in the middle. Now the feds are making them follow the law and in the bargain pay to report to the system through three companies that act as middlemen for the government -- middlemen who collect information already at the DMV. "We had to comply," said Romero. "They want us to go through an intermediary." Martha Cowell, the executive director of the 185-member State of California Auto Dismantlers Association, says the feds and the state are working on joining their systems so people like Romero don't have to do the same thing twice. But how long that will take is anybody's guess, she said. Until then, auto wreckers will just have to fork over the extra dough and send in their reports twice. "They now have an additional reporting requirement which means in most cases an additional cost to the business." So much for small government. Danbury Fire Department honors heroes in and out of uniform - Danbury News-Times Posted: 05 Oct 2009 06:08 AM PDT
DANBURY -- Sometimes, it's not necessary to be brave or heroic when faced with an emergency. Sometimes, it's just enough to keep a cool head. The Danbury Fire Department on Sunday honored firefighters and civilians who went above and beyond the call of duty over the past year, saving the lives of people who fell through the ice, were injured in traffic accidents, nearly drowned in swimming pools or suffered heart attacks. But one of the biggest rounds of applause from those who attended at the annual awards ceremony went to an 11-year-old girl who didn't panic last June 19 when her grandmother fell down the stairs. Sydney Knight, who attends Rogers Park Middle School, was upstairs watching television at her Benson Drive home when she heard a loud noise and ran to see what had happened, Fire Chief Geoffrey Herald said. She discovered 71-year-old Mary Lucille McCurdy had slipped on a rug and couldn't get up. Sydney, who was the only other person home at the time, tried to help her grandmother, but couldn't. "She didn't want me to call 911, but I couldn't get her up," Sydney said. She dialed the emergency number, and by the time Engine 26 arrived, Sydney had collected McCurdy's medications and insurance forms so they would be ready when her grandmother arrived at the hospital. She also called her mother at work to tell her what happened. Responding firefighters described Sydney as "acting in an efficient, calm and mature manner," Herald said, noting that McCurdy was present at Sunday's ceremony."Sydney, you and your family should be proud of your composure in a time of an emergency," Herald said. Fourteen other civilians and more than two dozen firefighters also were honored during a ceremony that officials said was one off the biggest and best-attended in years. "Today is a special day in the Danbury Fire Department," said firefighters' union President Lou DeMici. "I don't have to tell you what we do is dangerous, but we love what we do." A January ice rescue on Candlewood Lake was the incident that resulted in the most total honorees, four civilians, two of them volunteer firefighters from Germantown, and 11 members of the paid department who earned unit citations. A rollover accident on Interstate 84 in May resulted in unit citations for 10 firefighters. In that incident, the victim had been partially ejected and was trapped in the overturned vehicle. Firefighters accomplished the difficult extrication without causing further injury to the victim, Herald said. Contact John Pirro or 203-731-3342.
