Current standards are 35.5 mpg by 2016 - DailyTech Posted: 25 Nov 2009 08:11 AM PST The U.S. government is looking to
increase the fuel economy standards in America and claim that an
increase from the 35.5 mpg figure dictated for 2016 to a goal of 45
mpg across an automakers fleet will save consumers a combined $140
billion on fuel costs. The increase in fuel economy standards would
also cut green house gas emissions by 42 billion tons. IMarketNews reports that 78% of Americans are willing to pay more for cars with better fuel economy by there are not enough vehicles built to meet the demand. Mark Cooper from the Consumer Federation of America (CFA) said, "This is a case of utter market failure. Consumer demand is not being met by vehicle supply." Cooper goes on to day that the auto industry is capable of meeting a 45 mpg target by 2020 with off the shelf technology available now. Automobile Magazine reports that the CFA also wants to change the governmental agency responsible for setting fuel economy standards. Currently, the standards are set by the NHTSA and the EPA in a joint effort. The CFA wants to see the authority to set economy standards given solely to the EPA because the CFA feels that the NHTSA has been unduly influenced by the automotive industry in past years. Jack Gillis from the CFA said, "We want to make sure we don't just rest on the 2016 numbers and that we're prepared today, and get the industry to prepare, to move substantially beyond 2016." It is important to note that these mileage figures are fleet wide. That means that the fuel economy of a carmaker's entire fleet is averaged and has to meet the set standard. This allows the car markers to continue offering vehicles that get fuel economy less than the goal as long as there are more efficient vehicles available to raise the average. Edmunds called for a change in the way window stickers are displayed this week. The publication wants stickers to focus on cost to operate rather than fuel economy. Toyota recalls gas pedals - Detroit Free Press Posted: 25 Nov 2009 08:19 AM PST To quell rising consumer worries from its largest ever recall, Toyota Motor Corp. will shorten the gas pedal and install a new brake system on some of 3.8 million vehicles recalled because of the risk they may accelerate without warning. The problem, which allegedly has caused more than a dozen fatalities and resulted in more than 100 formal complaints to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, has presented the most serious challenge yet to Toyota's reputation as the auto industry's quality leader. Wednesday's announcement came one day after Toyota recalled 110,000 Tundra pickup trucks from model years 2000 through 2003 which have experienced underbody rust that in some cases may loosen spare tires mounted beneath the trucks. For 2005 through 2010 model year Toyota Avalons, 2007 through 2010 Camry and Lexus ES350, the automaker will reconfigure the floor surface beneath the pedal to create more space between the pedal and the floor. The action is designed to address the root cause of the unintended acceleration, which Toyota previously blamed on floor mats becoming trapped between drivers' feet and the gas pedal. The brake over-ride system that will be offered on the Camry, Avalon and Lexus ES and IS models should ensure the car stops if both the accelerator and brake pedals are applied at the same time. Many of the reported incidents involved sudden increases in speed when the cruise control system is engaged. Drivers have reported that their brakes could not stop their vehicles when they experienced the phenomenon. Toyota intends to make the brake over-ride feature standard throughout the Toyota and Lexus product lines beginning in January 2010. It is unclear how much these repairs and changes will cost, but it will be significant. "If you have to dig into the vehicle like in the power train or under the dash, the cost is high even if the part cost is low," said David Cole, chairman of the Center for Automotive Research in Ann Arbor. Toyota recalling about 110,000 Tundras and replacing gas pedals on 3.8 ... - Los Angeles Daily News Posted: 25 Nov 2009 07:21 AM PST TORRANCE - Toyota says it is recalling about 110,000 Tundra vehicles sold in the United States because of a corrosion issue and that it will replace gas pedals on 3.8 million previously recalled vehicles to address sudden acceleration problems. The Japanese automaker said in a statement released from its North American headquarters in Torrance that certain 2000-2003 model year Tundra pickup trucks may exhibit excessive corrosion on the frame rear cross-member after being operated in cold climate areas with high road salt use. "In the worst case, the spare tire stowed under the truck bed may become separated from the rear cross-member. Spare tire separation will create a road hazard for following vehicles and increase the likelihood of a crash," the statement said. Eventually, excessive rear cross-member corrosion may affect the operation of the rear brake line, possibly leading to the loss of the rear brake circuits, increasing vehicle stopping distances and the risk of a crash, it said. Toyota said the cold-climate areas of the nation that see a high use of salt to keep roads from freezing include the District of Columbia, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Maryland, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Virginia, Vermont, Wisconsin, and West Virginia. Beginning next month and through early 2010, Tundra owners will receive a Safety Recall notification via first class mail asking them to take their vehicles to a Toyota dealer for an initial inspection. Based on the result, Toyota will apply a corrosion-resistant compound to the rear cross-member or, if corroded, replace the part, the statement said.In Washington, D.C., the Transportation Department said in a statement that Toyota will have dealers shorten the length of the gas pedals beginning in January while the company develops replacement pedals. In some vehicles, brake override systems will be installed as a precaution. The announcement was a follow-up to a massive recall announced in late September, when Toyota told owners of the affected vehicles to remove driver's side floor mats to prevent the gas pedal from potentially becoming jammed. The recall -- the largest ever in the United States for the world's biggest automaker -- covers the 2007-10 model year Camry, the 2005-10 Toyota Avalon, the 2004-09 Prius, the 2005-10 Toyota Tacoma, the 2007-10 Toyota Tundra, the 2007-10 Lexus ES350 and the 2006-10 Lexus IS250/350. It came as a result of the high-speed crash of a 2009 Lexus ES350 near San Diego in August, killing a California Highway Patrol officer and three members of his family. The car struck a sport utility vehicle while traveling at speeds of 120 miles per hour, tumbled off an embankment and burst into flames. A family member in the Lexus called 911 before the crash, saying the accelerator was stuck and the driver couldn't stop the car. The government has attributed at least five deaths and two injuries to floor mat-related acceleration in Toyota vehicles, although some automotive experts say there have been hundreds of sudden-acceleration mishaps. Reports Wednesday from Washington, D.C., quoted transportation officials as saying dealers will shorten the length of the accelerator pedal on the recalled vehicles and in some cases remove foam from beneath the carpeting near the pedal. Owners of the ES350, Camry and Avalon will be the first to receive notification because the vehicles are believed to have the highest risk for pedal entrapment. Toyota plans to install a brake override system on the Camry, Avalon and Lexus ES350, IS350 and IS250 models to provide an "extra measure of confidence," according to the Transportation Department.
