Sergio Marchionne: I can't do double-duty forever - Detroit Free Press Posted: 08 Dec 2009 08:39 AM PST In a speech at the Peterson Institute for International Economics, Marchionne also warned that the global auto industry still had a third more capacity than it needed, and that European automakers and governments need a reckoning similar to what the Obama administration did when it forced General Motors Co. and Chrysler into bankruptcy to speed their restructuring. • Audio:http://www.piie.com/events/event_detail.cfm?EventID=133&Media" target="_blank"> Hear Marchionne's statement and answers to questions. Marchionne said European governments had provided piecemeal support to their automakers without tackling overcapacity he estimated at roughly 30%. He cited the French government's 6.5 billion euros ($9.6 billion) in support of automakers Renault and Peugeot-Citroen, and said no auto plant had closed in Germany since World War II. "The European plans have not addressed the underlying root causes," he said. "They are looking at the trees but are not seeing the forest. The U.S. has solved the problem." CEO also confirms Dundee engine site
The move satisfies a condition Fiat must meet under the Obama administration's agreement with the Italian automaker to increase Fiat's stake from 20% to 35%. Currently, the UAW retiree health-care trust fund owns 67.69%, while the U.S. owns 9.85%. Marchionne said increasing Fiat's stake is a secondary concern. "My objective right now is to get Chrysler monetized and pay off the VEBA trust," Marchionne said. "We need to get that done. There's a whole pot of retirees dependent on whether we do this right or not." Under Marchionne's plan, Chrysler is expected to double its sales to 2.8 million vehicles by 2014, three-fifths of which will come from parts shared with Fiat. Marchionne said he took the reins at Chrysler to ensure that there was no bureaucracy blocking the transfer of technology between it and Fiat. "I'm the only one who can guarantee the transfer," he said. "There's got to be this blood transfusion and it needs to happen at the speed of light." Marchionne said Chrysler workers know there will be no second chance should the Fiat plan fall apart. "The effort that's going on here is not to be underestimated," he said. "They know they're on their last leg." Contact JUSTIN HYDE: 202-906-8204 or jhyde@freepress.com This content has passed through fivefilters.org. Automotive advertising drops 30.8% - Detroit Free Press Posted: 08 Dec 2009 08:53 AM PST The automotive industry remains the single largest category of advertising in the United States even though automakers and dealers cut spending by 30.8% over the first nine months of the year, according to TNS Media Intelligence, a company that tracks advertising for all industries. Automakers and dealers spent $7.5 billion on advertising during the first nine months of the year, down from $10.8 billion for the same period last year, TNS Media said Tuesday. The decline in advertising mirrors a sales decline in the industry. Sales of new cars and trucks in the United States declined 27.4% in the United States during the first nine months of the year, according to Autodata Corp. Automotive expenditures have now declined for seventeen consecutive quarters, TNS Media said. General Motors Co. was the only automotive advertiser among the nation's top 10 advertisers, even though it reduced its spending by 15.5% to 1.4 billion. Overall, GM ranked third, behind Proctor and Gamble Co. and Verizon Communications Inc. Total advertising by all industries dropped by 14.7% according to TNS Media. New York-based TNS Media monitors advertising conducted on all forms of media, including print, radio, TV, Internet, social media, cinema and billboards.
