Automakers: Performance will not be sacrificed - ESPN.com Posted: 18 Jan 2010 08:40 AM PST
Green is the theme at this year's North American International Auto Show, set to run through Jan. 23 at Detroit's Cobo Center. Racing cars are virtually extinct at the NAIAS, and the show's annual Racing Day is a thing of the past as manufacturers increasingly turn to hybrid and electric technology in an effort to boost fuel economy. AP Photo/Carlos Osorio Mark Fields, executive vice president at Ford Motor Co., holds up the 2010 North American Truck of the Year award (Ford Transit Connect) and Car of the Year award (Ford Fusion Hybrid) Jan. 11 in Detroit. Although not as subdued as a year ago, the Detroit Show circa 2010 is still a pretty quiet place compared to recent times. The swagger so often exhibited on home turf by America's big three auto manufacturers is conspicuously absent -- not to mention the massive trucks and SUVs that have dominated the U.S. transportation market for decades. The combination of a reeling domestic auto industry and rising gas prices has resulted in a massive shift in priorities for the Detroit automakers. The star of this year's Detroit show is the third-generation Ford Focus, which was developed by Ford's European division for worldwide sale. It's hugely significant that Ford not only engineered one of its most popular and important models for an international market, but that it chose to debut the new design in Detroit instead of one of the European shows like Paris, Frankfurt or Geneva. Ford executives are riding high thanks to sweeping the North American Car and Truck awards with its Fusion and Transit Connect models, and the company invested far more money and effort in its NAIAS display than did its domestic competitors, General Motors and Chrysler. Ford's other major news was the introduction of a punched-out 5.0-liter V-8 engine and trim package for the Mustang. GM's stand featured minimal frills, with the focus devoted to the cars and trucks sold by its remaining brands (Chevrolet, Buick/GMC and Cadillac). Key new production models on display include the American-spec Chevrolet Cruze and the latest iteration of the Buick Regal. The Cruze is GM's chief competitor for the Ford Focus, while the Regal is a badge-engineered version of the Insignia sedan produced by GM's European brand Opel. Another important model for GM is a two-door coupe version of the popular Cadillac CTS, which was also shown in CTS-V trim. Chrysler's lack of fresh upcoming product was painfully obvious. A curious addition to the Mopar display was a lightly worked-over Lancia Delta hatchback, rebadged as a Chrysler. Other indications of Chrysler's ties to Fiat Auto included a pair of Fiat 500 micro-cars the company hopes to pitch as a rival to premium small cars such as the Mini and the Volkswagen Golf. VW put on by far the most ostentatious presentation to the estimated 5,000 media representatives on hand for the opening show, featuring strobe lights, smoke machines, thumping music and dancers. From a product standpoint, VW unveiled the New Concept Coupe, a Golf/Jetta based two-door notchback similar to a Honda Civic or BMW 3-series coupe. In fact, the German manufacturers dominated the show with an impressive display of hardware and hubris. Separated only by an aisle from its former partner Chrysler, Mercedes-Benz debuted the E-Class convertible and showed off the AMG SLS supercar with its gullwing doors. BMW rolled out its funky hatchback 5-series GT, while Audi previewed the sports coupe of the future with its electric E-tron concept car, believed to be a near production ready design to be sold as the R4. The Detroit show used to be famous for its over-the-top concept car offerings, especially from Chrysler. This year, at a show almost fully devoid of future preview machines, GM grabbed the spotlight with the Cadillac XTS Platinum, a large sedan set to replace the existing STS and DTS lines. Whereas recent Cadillac show cars were powered by fantasy league V-16 powerplants, the XTS features a direct injected 3.6-liter V-6 with hybrid capability. All in all the XTS is a surprisingly accurate glimpse into the future of the large American luxury sedan. At the other end of the spectrum, Honda unveiled the CR-Z coupe, intended to inject some fun into the hybrid market while still providing upward of 40 mpg. The CR-Z is the first hybrid vehicle available with a six-speed manual gearbox. The message coming out of Detroit was clear: Although fuel economy has become the priority, performance will not be sacrificed. American consumers should just expect to get their horsepower in the form of turbo- or supercharged four- and six-cylinder engines rather than the traditional. V-8. In that respect, American automakers are simply -- or, to be more accurate, finally -- falling in line with the rest of the world. Five Filters featured article: Chilcot Inquiry. Nissan Titan still has a future - Autoweek.com Posted: 18 Jan 2010 06:53 AM PST Even without a deal to team up with Chrysler Group on a new pickup, Nissan Motor Co. plans to keep the Titan truck in its lineup and develop a new range of models on its own. "We will do the next-generation Titan in-house," Larry Dominique, Nissan North America Inc.'s vice president for product planning, told Automotive News last week at the Detroit auto show. In August, Chrysler and Italian partner Fiat scrapped plans to share vehicles with Nissan, including a pickup. At that time, a Nissan spokesman said the company was exploring options, including finding another automaker as a partner. The next-generation Titan was going to be based on the Dodge Ram pickup and was scheduled to go on sale for the 2012 model year. Dominique said the next-generation Titan "obviously will be later than what it would have been with Chrysler." He didn't offer a timetable. One thing that Nissan must emphasize is better fuel economy, Dominique said. Titan sales plunged to 19,042 trucks last year, down 44 percent from 2008. Ram sales fell 28 percent to 177,268, the Ford F series fell 20 percent to 413,625, and the Chevrolet Silverado dropped 32 percent to 316,544. Last year, total U.S. light-truck sales plunged 24 percent to 4.7 million vehicles as the entire U.S. market dropped 21 percent to 10.4 million vehicles. Six Things Every Young Driver Needs to Know - MSN Money Posted: 18 Jan 2010 08:40 AM PST Driver's education programs are great for teaching your kids how to operate a car and the rules of the road. But they don't teach them everything. That's where you come in. An aspiring motorist who makes it through a typical driver's education program should have a good grasp of the rules of the road and basic car control. But the real world is full of other challenges the instructors don't cover in driving school — dead batteries, flat tires and those red-and-blue lights in the rearview mirror. As a parent who has put three daughters on the road, I've received the teary phone call that follows a parking-lot fender bender, and even answered the door when the police followed my oldest home after a late-night street race. The fourth daughter starts driver training next year (OMG!), and she will not leave the driveway without absorbing the following real-world lessons; i.e., situations that every driver — young or old — should know how to handle. Read: Driving Tips That Could Keep Your Teen Alive A Flat TireStatistics show that the average person will have five flat tires in their lifetime. It is best to be prepared for it. A few weeks ago, my wife noticed the "tick, tick, tick" caused by a large bolt jammed through her left front tire just in time to pull into a miraculously handy tire store. But because your teen driver may not be that lucky, he or she needs to know the tire-changing drill. Start by cracking open the vehicle owner's manual, which will offer detailed wheel-changing instructions specific to the car your teen is driving. The first step will be to locate the spare tire, the jack and other tools required to change the wheel. "The spare and tools used to all be in the trunk," says Steve Marsh, ASE master technician and owner of High Country Automotive Repair in Frisco, Colo. "But I just had to go help a customer change a flat because she could not find the handle for the jack in her GMC Yukon. The jack was under the rear deck, but the handle was below the back seat. We found them after checking the owner's manual." Marsh also likes the idea of a driveway tire-changing tutorial, a requirement for every new driver at my house. Each of my daughters has actually popped off the wheel cover, loosened the lug nuts, jacked up the car and lifted off the tire while I watched and offered guidance, but gave no physical help. The exercise was a confidence booster for both of us. Watch Video: How to Change a Flat Tire A Dead BatteryThe battery of your vehicle is essential because it supplies the short-term power to start the engine and enables auto accessories even if the car's engine is turned off. On average, a car battery will last for about three to five years. "Dad? I left the lights on and went into the mall, and now the car won't start." This is why jumper cables should be required equipment for every car. Using jumper cables to start a car with a dead battery requires a second car, of course. Coach your young driver to seek help from a friend or law enforcement officer on the scene, but never from a stranger. Again, the owner's manual will provide a jump-starting procedure specific to the vehicle, so make that the next chapter the kid reads. Then practice jump-starting a car in the driveway. "You can open the hood and not even find the battery on some late-model cars," Marsh says, "because it's under the back seat. In that case, there may be terminals located under the hood to use for jump-starting." About the only way you can screw up this process is by crossing the cables, Marsh says. What happens? Ask my wife how her Dodge Omni caught on fire. Remember to attach the red cable clamps to the positive terminals of each car's battery (which is usually marked with a "+" sign and a red cable end), and the black clamp to the negative terminal on the donor car and, on the dead car, to an unpainted metal surface under the hood that is not a moving part. A bolt head usually works well. Start the donor car, turn off all lights and electrical accessories on the dead car, and turn the key. Zoom, zoom. If nothing happens, check to see that the black cable is on a good ground on the dead car. If it's still a no-go, maybe the starter is shot. Then you call for a tow truck. Marsh says a portable jump starter (like the $67.25, 900-amp Jump 'n Carry 300XL, which is essentially an enclosed battery with two cables, is a good alternative to jumper cables. Discuss: Do you have any tips that aren't taught in a driver's education class? "That's what we carry on the tow truck," Marsh says. "There are consumer models that are compact enough to carry in the trunk, and with the jumper pack you don't need anyone to help you with a second vehicle."
