Monthly value ranking of new cars, trucks and SUVs shows GM models winning 14 of 31 segments

Irvine, CA (PRWEB) January 6, 2010 -- IntelliChoice.com, the leading source for automotive ownership cost and car values analysis, today announced "Best Deals of the Month" rankings for January 2010 that reveal one of the best-ever showings for GM brands based on extensive auto rebates and incentives.

Trending Up
GM. The automaker usually does well in the full-size truck segments, but this month the company's brands offer the best values in the Compact Pickup, Luxury Car, Full-Size Utility, and Sports Sedan/Wagon segments. GM also won the Sports Car and Compact Utility/Crossover segments, where it has traditionally done well.

What's New and Notable
"Every new winner for the month of January is a GM model, which is something that has not happened in years, and maybe never," said Charlie Vogelheim, executive editor for IntelliChoice.com. "Nearly half of the overall winners are GM cars, trucks and SUVs. Rebates certainly play a role in GM's showing, but keep in mind that other automakers are also offering discounts. GM's recent move to push Pontiacs and Saturns off the lot may influence the other domestic brands to match their prices and incentives. It will be interesting to see what happens when we start ranking 2010 model year cars in February."

Auto Rebates of the Month
The Kia Sorrento and Cadillac DTS both offer rebates of $5,000, enough to make them tops in their respective segments. The average new car rebate for January is $1,503—up from $1,367 in December, $1,407 in November and $1,450 in October. Where trucks have been most heavily discounted, larger rebates can now be found among SUVs, as well.

The Domestics
The news for January is focused on GM and GM incentives. The only other domestic brand winner for January is the Dodge Ram 3500, which takes two of the Full-Size Truck segments.

The Winners
IntelliChoice.com's "Best Deals of the Month" ranks the new cars, trucks, crossovers and SUVs that deliver the best cost of ownership in 31 vehicle classes. The best car values for January 2010 are:

The Methodology
IntelliChoice.com's "Best Deals of the Month" analyzes monthly car values based on the seven primary factors that determine a vehicle's long-term ownership costs: fuel economy, maintenance, repair, retained or resale value, licensing, state fees and taxes. Using these factors, IntelliChoice.com determines what it costs to own and operate new cars over five years. The firm examines each and every new car model-year trim line, as ownership costs can vary significantly among different trim lines of the same model.

Cyclone Power Technologies Demonstrates Benefits of New Waste Energy ... - Stockhouse

Posted: 06 Jan 2010 06:31 AM PST

POMPANO BEACH, Fla., Jan 06, 2010 (BUSINESS WIRE) --

Cyclone Power Technologies Inc. (Pink Sheets: CYPW) has released new video demonstrating the economic and environment benefits of utilizing its heat-regenerative, external combustion engines to power waste energy recovery applications.

Cyclone's Waste Heat Engine (WHE) is designed to power a grid-tied or stand-alone waste energy recovery system capable of generating between 1kW and 1MW of electricity. The patented piston-based engine captures 600F to 2000F of excess wasted heat from sources such as engine exhaust, commercial ovens, industrial furnaces and landfill flares. The Company is currently completing extensive testing of the WHE and expects to place smaller units into production later this year.

"We believe that our WHE systems can fill an enormous gap in the waste energy recovery industry -- namely small and medium sized businesses with low to medium quality excess wasted heat," stated Cyclone's CEO, Harry Schoell. "We believe that our WHE units are the only truly viable options for facilities as small as restaurants, to medium-sized industrial furnaces, foundries and gas flares." According to industry studies, such facilities comprise 20% or more of the nation's total waste heat resources.

The Company's WHE systems produce electricity from heat (thermal energy) that is otherwise lost into the atmosphere through tail pipes, smoke stacks, exhaust flues and flares. According to the US Clean Heat and Power Association, combined heat and power (CHP) and waste heat recovery processes like these currently:

-- Save business owners over $5 billion/year in energy costs;

-- Reduce emissions of NOx by 400,000 tons/year and SO2 by 900,000 tons/year; and

-- Prevent the release of 35 million tons of CO2 equivalent into the atmosphere.

Cyclone believes that the installation of its WHE systems can also drive investment and create jobs. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, if the U.S. were to increase its use of CHP and waste heat recovery systems to generate 20% of its electricity by 2030, it would spur $234 billion in private investment and create 1 million jobs.

Automakers end '09 on a positive note - Nashville Tennessean

Posted: 06 Jan 2010 07:22 AM PST

(2 of 2)

The only major automakers to show overall sales increases for the year were Subaru, 15 percent, and Hyundai/Kia, up 9 percent. Kia is a wholly owned subsidiary of Hyundai.

Hyundai's surge at the end of the year almost allowed it to overtake Nissan as the sixth-largest automaker in U.S. sales, but it came up short by about 35,000 vehicles.

GM continued as the nation's biggest car company last year, with total sales of 2.07 million, followed by Toyota at 1.77 million, Ford at 1.67 million, Honda at 1.15 million and Chrysler at 931,402.

Nissan's sales for the year, which included the Infiniti premium brand, totaled 770,103 vehicles, down from 951,350 in 2008.

Total U.S. auto sales for the year totaled just over 10.4 million, down from 13.2 million in 2008 and well below the 16 million sold in 2007.

Ford, Honda and Nissan's December sales beat analysts' estimates, though, as the industry showed signs of stabilizing.

Ford's appeal grows

Ford, spurred by an 83 percent gain for the Fusion sedan and a doubling of Taurus sedan sales, said its December sales results gave the company an estimated 15 percent of 2009 domestic sales, marking the first full-year increase in its home market share since 1995.

Ford said 2008's share was about 14 percent.

"Ford is suddenly becoming an acceptable buy for people who it wasn't before," said John Wolkonowicz, an IHS Global Insight analyst. "Ford is a cool purchase now, which it didn't used to be. And that is huge."

Hyundai's surge during what was an off year for almost every other automaker was credited in part to the company's value pricing, but also to a program started in late 2008 that offered to buy back any new vehicles from customers who had lost their jobs.

"Hyundai offers a lot of car for the money, and value triggered purchases in 2009," said Jesse Toprak, head of industry analysis for TrueCar Inc., a data service in Santa Monica, Calif. "They also increased incentive spending during the year and were more aggressive in fleet and rental sales."

Nissan's biggest gains in December came in sales of its Altima and Maxima cars and the Frontier pickup truck, all of which are built in Smyrna, as well as the Versa compact, which is made in Mexico.

Automakers said dealerships saw the usual post-Christmas rush as buyers sought year-end bargains.

Ken Czubay, Ford's U.S. sales vice president, said local dealer advertising was strong, but automakers held the line on incentive spending.

Companies spent an average of $2,542 per vehicle on incentives in December, down 11 percent from the same month a year ago.

Czubay said it is difficult to predict whether the momentum will continue in January, but he's optimistic. "There's actually a tremendous amount of pent-up demand out there," he said.

Chrysler Picks Individual Ad Agencies To Head Up Each Brand - CNN Money

Posted: 06 Jan 2010 06:46 AM PST

DOW JONES NEWSWIRES

Chrysler Group LLC tapped individual advertising agencies to manage ad development for its brands as the company's contract with Omnicom Group Inc.'s ( OMC) BBDO Detroit expires this month.

The move comes as the auto maker continues to perform the worst of any of the industry's major players in the U.S. It also takes place a month after Chrysler tapped advertising giant Interpublic Group of Cos .' (IPG) Universal McCann to handle its media planning and buying activities. Omnicom's PHD has the current contract, which also expires this month.

Advertising for the Chrysler brand will be led by Publicis Groupe SA's (PUBGY, PUB.FR) Fallon. But the Dodge, Jeep and Ram truck accounts will be headed by a trio of U.S. independent firms: Wieden + Kennedy, GlobalHue and the Richards Group, respectively.

Olivier Francois , Chrysler's head of marketing, said it is important the brands "retain individual agencies that fit with the brand direction." He added, "Individual agencies also will enable us to deliver unique ideas and broaden our reach to existing and potential customers."

Chrysler, which left bankruptcy protection in June under the management control of Fiat SpA (FIATY, F.MI), is shaking up its marketing as it continues to see declining auto sales. On Tuesday, the struggling auto maker said December light-vehicle sales dropped 3.7% and its full-year sales were the worst it has seen in 47 years.
