Dale Earnhardt Jr. Wins Georgia Power Pole Qualifying - The Auto Chanel

Posted: 06 Mar 2010 08:28 AM PST

HAMPTON, March 6, 2010: It has been a long drought for Dale Earnhardt Jr., but he took a cool sip of water during Friday's Georgia Power Qualifying Night at Atlanta Motor Speedway, earning his first NASCAR Sprint Cup Series pole position since April 2008. Earnhardt Jr.'s lap of 192.761 (28.761 seconds) will put him in front of the field for Sunday's Kobalt Tools 500.

"The car did everything I asked it to do," Earnhardt Jr. said. "The Amp Energy/National Guard Chevrolet was pretty good in practice; we just needed to get a little better. And we just need to hit that perfect lap."

Kyle Busch didn't find that perfect lap, but he wasn't too far off, posting a speed of 192.280 mph, 28.833 seconds).

"I felt really good about our lap," Busch said. "We got the most out of it we could get."

Juan Pablo Montoya will start third (192.106 mph, 28. 859 seconds) after turning what he said was a "crazy fast" lap.

"I'm surprised we ran that fast," Montoya said. "It was a good lap; we have been working on it really hard."

But perhaps no team has been working as hard as Earnhardt Jr.'s, which is desperately trying to shake the memory of last year's dismal season. In fact, even after earning his second career pole at Atlanta Motor Speedway, and even after learning he had turned the fastest qualifying lap for the new NASCAR Sprint Cup Series car, Earnhardt Jr. was subdued.

"It's good to be on the pole, and I'm real proud of it," Earnhardt Jr. said. "But we're hungry … we're just so hungry to do so much better on Sunday. We're starving for a good finish, and for something like this to happen Sunday for us. That's all we can think about."

Unadilla's David Ragan qualified was 17th, Alpharetta driver Joey Logano will start 29th and Dawsonville's Bill Elliott will start 34th.

Great seats are still available for Saturday's E-Z-GO 200 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race and Sunday's Kobalt Tools 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race. Purchase tickets online at www.atlantamotorspeedway.com or call (877) 9-AMS-TIX.

Corey Lajoie Wins Debut In Atlanta 150 - The Auto Chanel

Posted: 06 Mar 2010 08:28 AM PST

HAMPTON, March 6, 2010: Corey LaJoie became the third driver in NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour history to win his debut race by capturing the Atlanta 150 Friday at Atlanta Motor Speedway's quarter-mile Thunder Ring.

"This was supposed to be a one-shot deal," LaJoie said after the win. "Hopefully they'll give me a couple more now."

LaJoie held off a charging Tim Brown in the closing laps, beating and banging around the tight quarter-mile track. As they took the white flag, Brown drove hard into the first turn, trying mightily to knock LaJoie off his game.

Both drivers wiggled, then banged down the backstretch before coming through the final two corners side by side. LaJoie surged out of the final turn ahead and took the checkers mere feet before Brown.

"The last 10 laps were longer than the first 140," LaJoie said. "I can't say he raced me clean, but that's modified racing."

After the race, Brown was aggravated about the outcome and the trouble he had getting around lapped traffic. Admitting he was a sore loser, Brown said, "I definitely don't think the best car won the race."

LaJoie admitted he was the beneficiary of lapped traffic, but that didn't take away the glow of the 18-year-old's first series win.

"I love that I'm sitting in this seat right now," LaJoie beamed as he sat in the post-race winner's interviews. "Oh my God, it's amazing."

Proud father Randy LaJoie, a two-time Nationwide Series champion, greeted his son in Victory Lane, hooting, "Was that not a race? That was cool as hell!"

For Randy LaJoie, his son's win was just further validation that he had made the right decision all those years ago.

"I didn't go Cup racing because I wanted to give my kids a better dad, and I couldn't do that on the road," Randy LaJoie said. "So we went go-karting on Sunday. This makes my Sundays well worth it."

Racing action continues this weekend at Atlanta Motor Speedway with Saturday's E-Z-GO 200 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race and Sunday's Kobalt Tools 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race. Great seats are available at www.atlantamotorspeedway.com or by calling (877) 9-AMS-TIX.

Driver dies in crash after police chase - Poughkeepsie Journal

Posted: 06 Mar 2010 06:33 AM PST

State Police at Livingston are investigating a fatal auto accident that occurred at 2:19 p.m. Friday on State Route 9H in the Town of Claverack, Columbia County.

A car being pursued by police northbound crossed the center of Route 9H into the path of a southbound dump truck operated by 33 year old George Duryea of Nassau. Duryea's truck overturned on the west shoulder and he escaped unharmed.

The car came to rest in the parking lot of a local business on the east side of Route 9H, police said, and the driver of the car, a 44-year-old Dutchess County man, died at the scene.

The Village of Red Hook Police, investigating a suspicious person, stopped the car, which eventually fled the traffic stop. A Red Hook police marked patrol car pursued the subject north on Route 9 into Columbia County, where state police patrols attempted rolling roadblocks to slow the subject down.

The subject evaded the roadblocks continuing on at a high rate of speed northbound on Route 9H, police said, resulting in the crash. State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit, Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit, Greenport Rescue Squad, Philmont Rescue Squad, Claverack Fire Department and Coroner Angelo Nero assisted at the scene.

The car was reported as stolen from the Millbrook area earlier in the day, police said. The investigation is continuing.
