Auto Bits: Accessorize to get the most out of your truck - Morning Sun Posted: 24 Aug 2009 04:57 AM PDT Tip of the Week In a budget-conscious economy, more pickup truck owners are holding on to their truck longer than originally planned. If you're one of these truck owners, there are a few affordable accessories that can help you get the most of your truck and extend the life of your truck. - Truck bed liners and tailgate protectors: One way to extend the life of your truck is to protect the truck bed with a bed liner. There are a few options to choose from including spray-on or drop-in mats/rugs. By protecting the truck bed from rust, corrosion and scratching, you will extend the life of your truck and keep it looking like new. Another nice option for extending the life of your truck bed is a tailgate protector. A stainless steel tailgate protector can protect the tailgate from damage and also creates a flat surface to set tools on or acts as a makeshift fish cleaning station after a long day of fishing. - Storage pockets and cargo organizers: Truck bed storage pockets and cargo organizers can help you utilize the truck bed space you have by creating additional storage from wasted space. Storage pockets keep your truck bed organized and clean, all while providing easy accessibility to items at the rear of the truck. - Roll-up truck bed covers: Another truck accessory that will extend the life of your truck is a roll-up truck bed cover. These affordable roll-up tonneau covers are easy to install and give you 100 percent bed usage for hauling your gear. You simply roll up the cover to retrieve items in your truck bed. -- ARA The List According to Forbes.com, here are the most popular vehicle colors in America: 1: White Did You Know On Labor Day, HBO will debut a documentary about the closing of a GM plant near Dayton, Ohio. According to news reports, former workers at the factory got a sneak peak of the film and loved it. Car Q&A Q: I own a 2003 Cadillac Deville with only 11,000 miles. The ABS, brake, and traction light came on. My mechanic called GM and they suggested replacing both crankshaft position sensors. I had him do that. The lights stayed out for two weeks and now they are back on. What do you suggest? A: I would first ask the mechanic if he is familiar and understands the computer system. Second, has anyone checked the computer for fault codes? Your mechanic can also call Identifix for help in the diagnostic process. The crankshaft sensors are a common fault in the Northstar engine, and it's a good idea to replace them if there is ever a fault code for them. -- Junior Damato, Talking Cars columnist GateHouse News Service This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

After a hot start, cash for clunkers finishes slowly at a San Jose ... - San Jose Mercury News Posted: 24 Aug 2009 02:55 AM PDT With one day to go for the popular Cash for Clunkers program, the McDonald family hopped into "Big Red" for the last time Sunday morning and drove their beloved, old van to one of Silicon Valley's auto rows. "It's funny, the attachment that you get to a vehicle," said Ken McDonald, an education consultant from Mountain View. He drove in with his wife, Kathy, and their 16-year-old daughter Holly. "It's taken us to water polo, soccer, tennis, everything." They didn't have a problem finding Big Red's last parking space at Oak Tree Mazda on Stevens Creek Boulevard in San Jose. As at most of the strip's dealerships, last-minute shoppers did not flood the place. Four hours later, after the usual haggling and then some, the McDonalds drove off in a new Tribute sport-utility vehicle with a hybrid engine and "kiwi green" paint job. It will be Holly's car. "I'm happy!" she said, hugging and thanking her parents and even the salesman, Art Boseman. Today is the last day for the standard $4,500-per clunker subsidy because the federal program has run out of money — two months early. Buyers and dealers have until 5 p.m. Pacific Time to close deals. But if Sunday's underwhelming showroom action was any indication, no one should expect to see the auto version of a Christmas Eve buying spree. Confusion among buyers, extra paperwork hassles and rebate delays that frustrated dealers were still in play. On top of that, some dealerships had simply run out of the most popular cars that qualified for the program. For example, Phillip and Jayne Liao drove all the way from Union City to Stevens Creek Toyota in San Jose. "We'd like a Corolla," Phillip said. "I'm sorry," answered salesman Christian Dimas. "We're sold out of Corollas." "Then a Yaris," Jayne responded. "We have only one left," Dimas said. The three walked to see the Yaris, an electric blue, fully loaded economy car listed at $17,024, which was much more than the Liaos said they would pay. The ancient ritual of haggling over a new car's price had begun, but it lasted only a few minutes. The title to the couple's slightly damaged old van said it was a "salvage" vehicle, closer to junker than clunker. That difference sunk the deal. The dealership, Dimas explained, had already sealed about 300 clunker-deals but has been reimbursed by the program for only a fraction of them so far. As a result, the dealerships was shying away from "salvage" titled vehicles. "I wish I had known that," Phillip Liao said. Over at Courtesy Chevrolet just down the boulevard, Marc Finnegan had his heart set on a new Camaro because, well, he had owned such a muscle car when he was younger. Now 41, he saw his opportunity. His clunker, an old Ford work truck, qualified. But he said he didn't have the $5,000 down payment requested by the dealer. Meanwhile, the dealership declined to comment. "I thought bringing in the clunker was all I needed," Finnegan said. Cash for Clunker deals also introduced an extra layer of paperwork and to new-car purchases. Back at Oak Tree Mazda, Ken Beireis' 1985 Mustang clunker was gladly accepted, but he had to literally go the extra mile back home in San Jose to bring back auto insurance documents dating back 12 months, not just the usual six required for the usual car deal. The computer technician left happy in a new, sporty sedan anyway. Except for the extra trip home, his deal was quick and smooth, partly because he didn't have to compete against many other buyers in the showroom. "I'm glad I got here early," Beireis said in the early afternoon, "but I expected to see a lot more people than I'm seeing." Contact Joe Rodriguez at 408-920-5767. West Virginians can build their own trucks - Charleston Daily Mail Posted: 23 Aug 2009 09:04 PM PDT HINO Motors, a subsidiary of Toyota, took over the old Walker Systems plant in Williamstown two years ago and converted it into an assembly plant for trucks. The $15 million investment may be a modest one in the automotive world, but it has meant about 100 jobs to Wood County. And this month, Hino won a bid to provide 40 heavy-duty trucks to the state Department of Transportation. "Hino Motors has been a solid partner with the state of West Virginia since locating their first American assembly plant here in 2007," Gov. Joe Manchin said. "I believe that this announcement is an all-around win for the state, the company and all of the employees at Hino. "I am eager to soon be able to see a product that was built in West Virginia from the ground up that will serve as a tool to help improve our roads and highways. I congratulate the company and its employees and the dealer for successfully winning this bid." The plant opened two years ago and has slowly ramped up its production to 2,500 trucks a year. The company's faith in West Virginia will not go unrewarded. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
