Electric truck maker to move to Stockton - San Francisco Gate

Posted: 25 Aug 2009 07:47 AM PDT

Electric Vehicles International said Monday that it will open its Stockton office in September, moving into a vacant industrial building just south of the city's port. Based in Toluca, Mexico, EVI makes small, battery-powered trucks as well as electric drive trains.

"California is the first state that's been really aggressive with electrics," said Steve Riley, the company's vice president of sales and marketing. "Once California adapts to it, the rest of the United States will."

The move also will bring the company closer to its owner, Silicon Valley investor Carl Berg.

California has become a hub of the burgeoning electric car industry, even as the state's last traditional auto plant - New United Motor Manufacturing Inc. in Fremont - faces possible closure. The Bay Area alone holds Tesla Motors, makers of luxury electric sports cars, as well as Zap, whose electric vehicles move slower than Tesla's but cost much less.

"California seems to have the lion's share of the technology and a pretty good infrastructure for these companies," said Paul Scott, vice president of the electric-car advocacy group Plug In America. "It's just one more step in the right direction. The momentum for plug-in cars and vehicles is building quite rapidly."

Most of these companies are small, and the number of jobs they provide pales in comparison to older auto plants. But Stockton officials were still pleased to land EVI. Company officials predict that their facility will employ more than 100 people by the end of next year.

"This is right up our alley in terms of the type of industry we want to see locate here," said Stockton Mayor Ann Johnston.

EVI's building, on Army Court, will be close to the sea port as well as rail lines and freeways, Johnston said. "It is a perfect spot for someone who wants to locate in the United States and make electric vehicles. How cool is that?"

The company has not always had ideal relations with its host cities.

In 2004, Anderson, Ind., sued EVI over an unpaid government loan. According to stories in the local newspaper, EVI received a $1.1 million loan in 1997 from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, guaranteed by the city of Anderson. The company missed payments, leading to the lawsuit. The company moved the bulk of its manufacturing to Mexico, and the city and the company reached a settlement in 2005.

GILLETTE, Wyo. -- The owner of a Gillette auto sales yard says the driver of a pickup truck hit 11 vehicles at the business before driving away on Saturday morning.

Bob Davis is owner of Roadrunner Auto in Gillette. He says his employees saw the driver first try to drive between two vehicles on the lot and accidentally hit one of them.

Davis says the driver then apparently tried to flee and hit several more vehicles as he was backing up, pushing one vehicle into the building. He says the damage was more than $80,000.

Davis says police later caught up with the driver.

Gillette police say they can't confirm anyone was arrested in the incident. They say a police report wasn't complete.
