WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. — Another Monday race for NASCAR's Sprint Cup Series left some drivers wondering whether it would have been better to race in the rain.

A band of wet weather moved over the road course at Watkins Glen International at the scheduled start of Sunday's Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips race and lingered all afternoon, prompting officials to move the start to Monday at 11 a.m. (ESPN, WTSO-AM/1070).

The course takes at least two hours to dry, and rain was still falling at 4 p.m., making it too late to complete the 90-lap event before sunset. The track stretches nearly 2½ miles around 11 turns and has several elevation changes.

Cambridge native Matt Kenseth, who is 11th in the Race for the Chase point standings, will start 42nd.

Last week's race at Pocono also was moved to Monday because of rain. With just five races before the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship, another delay wasn't welcome.

"It (delaying a day) makes it really hard on the race teams because Monday is normally the guys' day off," Robby Gordon said. "Now, it's two weeks in a row. It may be a day off today because we didn't race, but they're not home with their families. And the other side is for the fans. They stand around for two days, and a lot of them have to go back to work on Monday. It's kind of a bummer.

"... I wish we'd just suck it up and run on rain tires. As far as I'm concerned, I'd run with them on the ovals, too."

NASCAR spokesman Kerry Tharp said using rain tires wasn't really an option.

"As high as the stakes are, we feel it's in the best interests of everybody if we race on dry tracks," he said.

Saturday's Nationwide race at The Glen was also threatened by rain. Though it never materialized, rain tires were stacked in the garage area just in case.

NASCAR's first major points race in the rain came just over a year ago at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal in a Nationwide Series race, and that made a lasting impression on four-time Cup champion Jeff Gordon.

"I can't imagine what it would be like in a Cup race," Gordon said. "I thoroughly enjoyed watching it rain up there. That was highly entertaining, but I was very glad I wasn't inside the car."

Carl Edwards' team was one of several that didn't install a windshield wiper during an extended early caution when NASCAR went to the rain tires. Without a wiper, Edwards stuck a squeegee out the driver-side window to clean his windshield during later caution periods. Canadian road racer Ron Fellows won the race.

"I think it would actually be fun to drive the cars in the rain and you can feel the grip level," Gordon said. "But as you saw, the windshield wipers don't work, the defog doesn't work. When a guy's got to use a squeegee inside the car, there's something wrong. Those cars should not be out there in the rain."

"It was pretty fun to watch," Kevin Harvick said. "I don't know how much fun it would be to drive. The problem is you can't see. I practiced the truck in the rain here. The cars aren't really that bad to drive because you have to slow down so much. The other thing is the rooster tail that shoots out the back of the car. I mean, I'd try it."

August 10, 2009

SAN JOSE, Calif. — eBay Motors recently launched a contest to find the nation's biggest auto fans and is encouraging enthusiasts to showcase their favorite rides for a chance to win a Las Vegas trip and prizes.

The 2009 Motors Master Contest will recognize top vehicle enthusiasts in four categories: muscle cars, tuners, off-road vehicles and motorcycles.

Winners will receive the "Motors Master" title for the category, a trip to Las Vegas to attend the 2009 Specialty Equipment Market Association Show and receive an eBay Motors shopping spree.

Contestants must record a short video about their car, truck or motorcycle project and tell why they feel they would be the best do-it-yourself project expert for their category.

Videos can be uploaded to www.motorsmaster.ebaymotors.com

eBay Motors will bring the four winners to the SEMA Show, held Nov. 4-7, where their projects may be displayed.

Winners will be given $2,500 eBay Motors shopping spree to purchase parts and accessions for their next project.

As far as voting, the initial round will be done by the public, as visitors to the site rate the videos, along with the panel of judges.

When the 10 finalists for each category are determined, the judges will examine the submissions and vote for the final winners.

The judges are:

—Famous Rhodes, director of parts and accessories for eBay Motors

—Peter MacGillivray, vice president, events and communications, SEMA

—John Neff, editor-in-chief of Autoblog

—Paul Crowe, editor-in-chief of thekneeslider.com

Also, eBay users who rate videos can register to win a $1,000 eBay gift certificate.

Visitors can enter once per day during the contest.

Entries are due by Aug. 31, and voting will go through Sept. 14. Results are scheduled to be announced in early October.

"We encourage anyone who loves wheels, engines, spoilers, instrument panels or any other vehicle add-on to send us a video and tell us why they should be a 2009 Motors Master," Rhodes noted.

"eBay Motors offers the widest selection of parts and accessories anywhere, and we are excited to see the passion from our community come to life through this contest," he added.

Unexpected Used Cars Boom From Cash For Clunkers - The Auto Chanel

Posted: 10 Aug 2009 07:01 AM PDT

SEE ALSO: Cash for Clunkers Consumer Guide-Qualifying Vehicles

Washington DC August 10, 2009; The AIADA newsletter reported that one unexpected consequence of cash for clunkers is that dealers are selling lots of late-model used cars to customers who couldn't get in on the clunkers deal.

According to Automotive News, some dealers say they're paying sky-high prices for used cars just to have something for all that traffic to look at.

Dealers say many consumers enticed into the dealership by the clunkers program stuck around when they found out their vehicle didn't qualify or that their credit rating couldn't get them a loan. In many cases, they bought used cars.

Heavy new-car incentives usually drive down used-vehicle prices, but that hasn't happened, dealers and analysts say.

To qualify for the federal incentive, new cars must have combined highway and city fuel economy of at least 22 MPG, and light trucks must have at least 18 MPG. Trade-ins must be drivable, less than 25 years old, and have combined fuel economy of 18 MPG or less. They must have been continuously insured and registered to their owners for at least one year.

One analyst says that about half the customers who didn't buy a new car under cash for clunkers bought a used vehicle.

Clouds lift for car dealers, buyers - Statesman Journal

Posted: 10 Aug 2009 07:15 AM PDT

Eighty cars lined the back lot Sunday at Withnell Hyundai, traded in under the federal "Cash for Clunkers" program.

"Now we just have to figure out what to do with them," sales manager Mike Asman said. "We can't sell them."

Down the road at Capitol Toyota, they're out of Corollas.

"We won't get more until mid-September," manager Dennis McCarthy said.

The federal program offers owners of older cars and trucks $3,500 or $4,500 toward a new, more fuel efficient vehicle.

In the Salem area, it's giving local businesses a much-needed boost.

"The program has been, from a promotional perspective, a total success," said Mike O'Brien, of O'Brien Auto Group.

"It's brought more people in, and not all those people are 'Cash for Clunkers' (shoppers)."

Things had slowed down a little by Sunday, local salespeople said. Still, a steady stream of prospective customers wandered the lots.

"Thank you, Obama!" Kiki Heard exclaimed, as she and her husband, John, closed the deal on a new Toyota Yaris.

Their 1989 Chevy truck began acting up Saturday, and they found out that night that it would cost $1,800 to fix it.

"We made the decision to take advantage of the program this morning," Kiki Heard said.

Everett and Anne Mozell were in the market for a new small pickup to replace their 1985 Chevrolet S-10.

The truck is just used occasionally to haul things, they said.

"We never would have thought of trading it in," Everett Mozell said. But the federal program turned them into buyers.

The vehicle they wanted was sold out at the local dealer, but they'll keep looking.

Although Sunday's shoppers said the process was a breeze, dealers said they've had to send some people home for the correct paperwork — including proof that the vehicle has been registered and insured continuously for the past year.

"I would encourage anybody that is trying to do the program to get on the Internet and look up the rules," O'Brien said.

And some dealers have yet to see any money from the government.

"We've sent a lot of staff hours making sure everything's processed correctly," said David Withnell, of Withnell Hyundai and Withnell Dodge.

"I'm just anxious to get paid."
