Feb. 15, 2010 | Construction work has resumed on a three-story office building in Wauwatosa after an 18-month stoppage, with plans to create an outpatient surgery center there.

The 60,000-square-foot building, at 2999 N. Mayfair Road, Wauwatosa, is being developed by VJS Development Group, which had initially planned to lease it to Mayfair Radiology. The building is south of W. Burleigh St., and is replacing the former home of radio station WLUM-FM, which was razed.

The $15 million project, however, ground to a halt in the spring of 2008 after Mayfair Radiology was bought by Aurora Health Care Inc. The radiology practice in January 2009 moved into an Aurora facility just south of Mayfair Mall, at 10400 W. North Ave.

Aurora had signed a lease for the Mayfair Road buiding. But work stopped while the health care system studied its space needs to determine what operations would move to the building.

The plan now is to open an outpatient surgery center, along with support services and doctors' offices, by the first half of 2011, said Mary Reinke, an Aurora spokeswoman. The building's exterior work is about halfway completed, and the structure should be enclosed by summer, she said. »Read Full Blog Post

bill-byrne-mug.jpgBill ByrneBill Byrne of Marne just might have been able to help NASCAR fans get to Valentine's Day dinner two hours earlier Sunday, if only someone had offered him a shovel during the
Daytona 500.

Byrne, who supervises road repairs for the Kent County Road Commission, has been helping fix potholes on area streets for the past 25 years. But he also moonlights as a tire specialist
for Joe Gibbs Racing and driver Joey Logano, who races the No. 20 Home Depot Toyota.

Byrne was at Daytona International Speedway when a pothole surfaced on the track, which resulted in two delays totaling about two-and-a-half hours of downtime.

"(Team president) J.D. Gibbs and Zippy (crew chief Greg Zipadelli) teased me about getting out there and using my expertise," Byrne said. "I did think about going out there, but I don't think many know what I do during the week. They already had a lot of people out there, and I figured they would have thought I was just some crackpot and tell me to go back and sit on my pit box."

Jamie McMurray eventually held off Dale Earnhardt Jr. to capture the 52nd annual race, which served as the season opener.

"What I heard at the track was that they called all the truck drivers together and were looking for automotive bonding," said Byrne, who joins the team at all 36 Sprint Cup points races. "They announced that they used some chemicals to fill it, but the rumor around the track was that it was bondo.

"Personally, I never would have thought of it. I commend them for thinking of it."

Byrne said he was surprised that the repairs took so long, but he did praise NASCAR for fixing the track and completing the race.

"For one, they probably didn't anticipate this happening, and they didn't have a plan ready," Byrne said. "And second, with the steepness of the track, it is going to make the material difficult to adhere. I have walked the track and I can tell you that gravity is against you. The steepness was the biggest obstacle to overcome.

"It's easy for me to sit here and be a Monday morning arm chair road repair worker. They were taking a stab at it and the way it went, they had some type of success. Was it perfect? No. Was it fast? No. But did it get job done? Yes. Mission accomplished."

Byrne has participated on two Cup championship winning teams at Gibbs. The team won titles with Tony Stewart in 2002 and 2005.

He said he might offer up his assistance before the next pothole pops up.

"If I see John Darby, the director of the Sprint Cup Series, I may tell him I have a little expertise and I could give some input," Byrne said. "Not that I'm going to tell him what to do, but I could give him some ideas and brainstorm."

Peters on a thrill ride with Red Horse, win at Daytona - NASCAR

There are guys who like playing the role of racer, and then there are pure racers.

Timothy Peters is a racer, pure and simple. And after pulling off a dramatic last-lap pass of Todd Bodine to win the Nextera Energy Resources 250 to open the 2010 Camping World Truck Series, he now knows what it's like to experience winning at Daytona International Speedway.

It was the second career victory for Peters, the 29-year-old driver of the No. 17 Toyota for Red Horse Racing who also won last year's Truck event at Martinsville. Peters talked with NASCAR.COM about what this latest victory meant to him, and more.

Q: How does it feel to win at Daytona?

Peters: To me, just to be in Victory Lane at Daytona is almost an overwhelming emotional feeling. ... We just had to make sure we stayed out of trouble and we were there at the end. [Crew chief] Jeff Hensley made great calls throughout the race and the pit crew, Lord, they were awesome on pit road. On our first pit stop I think we went from 12th to sixth. We made great stops all night long.

Q: How did you avoid all the mayhem at the end of the race?

Peters: Well, we did our best to stay out of the trouble. Sometimes it's hard to control your own fate there, but I guess the Good Lord was looking out for me and helped me maneuver that truck through all the mess.

Q: How pleased are you to be in your current ride at Red Horse Racing?

Peters: [Owner] Tom DeLoach gave me an opportunity. I told him a little while ago that he took a country boy and made all his dreams come true. I'm just very thankful to have a great owner in Tom, and all these guys over here at the fab shop who work day in and day out. They are the backbone of our team. Without them, we wouldn't have the quality trucks that we are able to put out on the track. (Continued)
